If Government Give Us Fuel Price Hike, We Will Give Them General Strike

Indonesian workers strongly disagree and they stated that they will take measures against fuel price hike by the new government under Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Jusuf Kalla. Such measures included national day of action and general strike.

Said Iqbal, president of Konfederasi Serikat Pekerja Indonesia (KSPI) or Indonesian Trade Union Confederation stated that anti fuel price hike general strike will mobilize two millions workers who are members of KSPI.

“We are ready to organize nationwide strike on October or November if government will rise fuel price, ” said Said tho inilah.com, on Friday (29 August 2014)

To solve the deficit problem in state budget, he continued, the government must have the guts to make some innovations. Such as using remaining budget fund (Rp 30 trillions), ministerial budget efficiency, convert state power station’s fuel from diesel fuel to coal or gas.

“Including rise the price of gas export to China. If such measures are taken, we are sure there will be enough money for the new government to proove their political promises that sided with the people not the Neo Liberals,” he said.

Rising fuel price up to 20% and 40% will bring significant impact for poor people. It will eradicate their ability to buy goods up to 50%. “Get ready, the number of the poor will enormously rise. From near poor will be poor,” he warned.

Kongres Aliansi Serikat Buruh Indonesia (KASBI) or Congress of Indonesian Trade Union Confederation also stated that they are against fuel price hike. This left wing trade union confederation with membership up to more than 300.000 will hold national day of action on September 15th, 2014.
